What is a labyrinth?
A labyrinth is a meandering path, often unicursal, with a singular path leading to a center. Labyrinths are an ancient archetype dating back over 4000 years, used symbolically, as a walking meditation, choreographed dance, or site of rituals and ceremony, among other things. Labyrinths are tools for personal, psychological and spiritual transformation, also thought to enhance right-brain activity. Labyrinths evoke metaphor, sacred geometry, spiritual pilgrimage, religious practice, mindfulness, environmental art and community building.
And a SkyLabyrinth?
The open creative space that AfrikaBurn provides was the catalyst for SkyLabyrinth. Carl Pretorius, SkyLabyrinth creator, loves experiencing labyrinths but also lives by doing things a bit differently.
So he asked himself the following questions about labyrinths:
Are labyrinths like they are because it is the norm?
Can they be designed very differently?
Can they be enhanced or improved upon?
He applied the concept of a rising path to Classical and Medieval labyrinths and the result was stunning. The rising path from the entry point of the labyrinth to its center is symbolic of one’s struggle or challenge. Reaching the elevated center of the labyrinth gives the labyrinth walker a far better perspective. The downward sloping exit path is symbolic of releasing and accepting. As our spirituality evolves, so too can the spiritual practices that are known to us. SkyLabyrinth brings another dimension to this ancient ritual and we hope and pray that we can get the support to enable us to bring SkyLabyrinth to you @ AfrikaBurn 2019.
“The point of a maze is to find its center, the point of a labyrinth is to find your centre.”
SkyLabyrinth at AfrikaBurn
Collectively, we as humans are evolving spiritually. Labyrinths have for thousands of years been used as sacred spaces to quieten and open our minds. SkyLabyrinth is an evolutionary step in labyrinth design. By adding a 3rd dimension, experiencing SkyLabyrinth will open your mind like no other and give you an enhanced perspective.
SkyLabyrinth is the design and build of possibly the world’s first 3D labyrinth where the path to the center is on a constant incline. The design is such that it will give the labyrinth walker a far more meaningful and effective experience, providing more enlightenment and/or generating more creative thought, opening one up to deeper solutions and insight.
Not only will SkyLabyrinth do this, but it will be a visually appealing art piece installation that will be fitting of the open, fun, mindfull space that the AfrikaBurn event offers.
